Owners of second hand shops in Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe and Bolton-on-Dearne being encouraged to sign up to a scheme aimed at preventing stolen goods being sold on.

CheckMEND is an online stolen property checking service, which allows retailers to search a number of databases at once.

When a search is carried out through the CheckMEND’s website, the information is compared with the largest database of stolen goods and disabled mobile phones in the world, meaning second hand retailers are able to see if items have been reported stolen before they buy them. A ‘safe seller’ poster displayed in their window will identify shops taking part in the scheme.

Det Insp Sharon Hancock said: “The CheckMEND system really does help to ensure shops are not selling on stolen goods and putting money into the hands of criminals.

“I would encourage Barnsley’s second hand shops to sign up to the scheme. We are confident that by using this scheme Barnsley residents and shops are sending out a clear message that stealing items to sell will not be tolerated.”
