Four men have been arrested in connection with an illegal tobacco scheme worth £400,000.

Three men from Doncaster and one from Essex were arrested yesterday after Revenue & Customs officers intercepted a lorry carrying around two tonnes of loose tobacco.

The haul of tobacco, thought to be worth around £400,000 in unpaid duty and VAT, has been seized.

Assistant Director for Criminal Investigation, Peter Hollier, said: “HMRC is tackling the problem of illegal tobacco in South Yorkshire and across the rest of the UK and we are determined to catch those involved in smuggling. We encourage anyone with information on the sale, supply or distribution of cheap, counterfeit or duty free tobacco to contact our hotline on 0800 59 5000.”

In addition to the arrests, HMRC officers searched six premises in the Doncaster area as part of the ongoing investigation.

The four men were taken for questioning and later released on bail pending further enquiries.
