New course to launch on green issues

Dearne Valley residents can now get a recognised qualification in environmental issues for free, thanks to a grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

The environmental sustainability courses are aimed at people who are currently unemployed to help them to get a job in the low carbon sector.

The qualification is also aimed at people who already have a job but may be looking to broaden their horizons or householders looking to find out how they can save energy and reduce bills.

The two day training courses, to be run at both Barnsley and Dearne Valley colleges, will cover topics which cover areas such as sustainable living and how to reduce waste.

The courses are being offered as part of the Dearne Valley Eco-Vision, which aims to transform the former coalfield area to showcase best practice in low carbon living and green technologies.

Joanne Wehrle, Dearne Valley Eco-Vision project manager, said: “Research has shown that the low carbon and renewable energy sector is a growth area for jobs in the future, but that there are skills gaps in these fields.”

The courses are open to anyone aged 19 or over living in the Dearne. Contact Barnsley College on 01226 216224 or Dearne Valley College on 01709 513148 for more information.
