Bus passengers heading to Doncaster Robin Hood Airport can go online for free thanks to a new Wi-Fi service introduced by Stagecoach Yorkshire.

A £1.1million investment by Stagecoach Yorkshire has seen eight new buses fitted with free Wi-Fi internet access for the first time on buses between Barnsley and the airport.

The fleet of high-tech Scania single deckers have been introduced on route X19, which connects Barnsley with Doncaster-Robin Hood Airport.

All journeys on the new look X19 service will now have free Wi-Fi, allowing passengers with smartphones to check emails, tweet, shop online or browse the web all the way to their destination.

Branding giving details of the X19 route, frequency, free Wi-Fi and great value travel tickets will appear on some of the new buses.

Stagecoach Yorkshire has also improved the frequency of the service by doubling the number of buses to every 30 minutes between Barnsley and Doncaster, Monday to Saturdays. The X19 buses will continue to run every hour during the day on Sundays.

Rupert Cox, commercial director, Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We are very pleased to be bringing Wi-Fi to our Barnsley passengers for the first time. The X19 is popular with workers, shoppers and leisure travellers and the introduction of free internet access is part our commitment to catering for the requirements of passengers, for both business and leisure.

“Another improvement is the increased frequency of service between Barnsley and Doncaster, which we have been able to introduce thanks to part funding from government through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund scheme.”

The X19 route runs from Barnsley to Doncaster-Robin Hood Airport, with stops along the way at Darfield, Goldthorpe and central Doncaster.

Passengers logging on to X19 Wi-Fi for the first time will need to fill in a few details. During subsequent X19 journeys, they will be able to connect straight away.

The X19 is the fourth Stagecoach route in the region to introduce free Wi-Fi. Stagecoach’s X17, 120 and 43 services also provide passengers with free internet access, with 45 buses now fitted with free Wi-Fi.
