Public exhibition over Epworth supermarket plans as more details of scheme revealed

Proposal to build a supermarket in Epworth will also include a doctor’s surgery and new homes, it has been revealed.

Further details about the proposed development have been unveiled ahead of a planned public consultation this evening where residents can have their say on the plans.

Tonight and tomorrow developers Tillbridge Developments will outline its aspirations for Epworth’s Holmes and Gardens site on the land off the A161 on the edge of the village.

These include a foodstore, doctor’s surgery, retirement homes, a link to the High Street, houses and a relocated garden centre, said the Tillbridge’s Luke Pickering.

But speaking at a meeting of Epworth Town Council he stressed that plans were at a very early stage, and that the exhibition was the first step in a long process that might eventually lead to a planning application.

He said no retailer was yet involved with the food store, though it was hoped that one could join the project “at some point in the future.”

Mr Pickering added: “Every home and business in Epworth is to be invited to the consultation.

“You will all get a chance to see the plans, and we will come back to you when we have the details.

“We will listen and talk to you throughout the process.

“Tell your friends. We want to see as many people as possible.”

Epworth Town Council chairman Don Stewart said he was pleased Mr Pickering had met the council.

“This is the first time we have been given forward information.

“You have been very open, and everyone can come and look to see for themselves what’s being proposed.”

There had been strong rumours circulating around Epworth that supermarket giant Tesco was interested in signing up to the project.

However, last week a spokesman for the retailer said those rumours were ‘pure conjecture.’

The public exhibition us being held at Epworth’s Imperial Hall from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Tuesday and from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday.
