Doncaster is set for a jobs boom after a leading retailer announced plans to open a distribution centre creating 350 full-time positions.
The Range - which specialises in home, garden and leisure products - is set to take over the DHL site in Thorne after securing the gigantic 750,000 square feet warehouse.
The company has a store in York Road, Doncaster, and has opened another 20 stores since the start of 2011, increasing its total store count to 67.
To support the growth all around the country it required another distribution centre to make sure all stores’ demands for stock were always met.
Chris Dawson, who owns and runs the business commented: “We are very excited about the new distribution centre in Doncaster, each one is very important to us as a company, as we always want to be able to supply such a wide-range of products to all our customers.”
The new distribution centre is set to create approximately 350 full-time jobs and indirect jobs will be created through services and supplies that the distribution will require to assure it runs efficiently.
Chris added: “We are very pleased to be able to create a number of local jobs and are confident this distribution centre will play a big part in the continued success of The Range brand across the UK.
“I would like to thank the council for welcoming us to Doncaster with such open arms.”
An officially date for the centre to open has not yet been confirmed.
Hundreds of jobs were lost when the DHL distribution centre, operated on behalf of MFI group, closed in Thorne after MFI went into administration in 2008.
Doncaster MP Ed Miliband had opened the warehouse, located off Junction 6 of the M18, in 2007 after selecting Thorne for its good motorway connections.
The distribution centre was leased to MFI on a ten-year contract at a value of just over £3 million a year.
At the time MFI said the downturn in the property market and “severe cash flow pressure” had led to difficulties.
Meanwhile a planning application for eco offices at Robin Hood Airport could spell a further economic boom for the town.
Leeds-based sustainable designers Edward Architecture have lodged a full planning application for a new development called Doncaster ECO business park that will comprise of 41 units covering over 61,000sqft of space for Workpods Limited, part of Monument Investment Holdings Limited.
The planned sustainable buildings would incorporate environmentally-friendly design techniques including, rain water harvesting and natural ventilation.
By adopting these techniques the designers of units hope they will be the most economical offices to run in terms of energy costs in Yorkshire.
