three more areas of Doncaster are set to benefit from BT’s major expansion of high-speed fibre broadband, which is expected to help create jobs and give a big boost to the local economy.

Homes and businesses in Tickhill, Conisbrough and Mexborough will be upgraded by the end of spring 2014 as part of the £2.5 billion commercial rollout of fibre broadband.

The expansion also includes a substantial investment in making fibre broadband more widely available in areas which already have the high-speed technology or are due to receive it.

Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and the CBI both welcomed the investment and said it would help to build confidence of an economic recovery among local households and businesses.

It will take the total number of premises with access to fibre broadband in South Yorkshire to more than 460,000. More than 330,000 are already able to get the service.

Tom Keeney, BT’s regional director, said: “This latest investment is a further vote of confidence in the future success of South Yorkshire.”

Daniel Fell, deputy chief executive of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce, said they welcomed the investment. “Businesses thrive on good connectivity. Doncaster has a great position on the UK’s transport infrastructure and local businesses jump on that opportunity to reach new markets, promote their goods and services and create wealth for the town. Hidden infrastructure works no differently.

“If businesses have improved connectivity they will use it to communicate with customers faster and better and to deliver results for the local economy.”
