NEWS....... Doncaster Fire Station, Leger Way, Doncaster.

A NEW restaurant which is set to become one of Doncaster’s biggest is set to blaze into action at the town’s landmark former fire station.

Fish eaterie Whitby’s is set to open its doors early next month at the former Doncaster fire headquarters which have laid derelict since 2004 after crews moved into a new station just a few yards away.

But the building, which dates from 1936, is to rise phoenix-like from the flames, after being converted into a stylish new restaurant capable of hosting nearly 170 diners.

Restaurant manager Darren Richards said: “Everything is going very well and we are looking forward to opening. It is going to be something very different in Doncaster and one of the biggest in town.”

The restaurant, opposite Doncaster Racecourse, will also have a takeaway counter, will be open seven days a week and is expected to create 60 full and part time jobs at the building which is situated on the corner of Leger Way and Leicester Avenue.

And the name could soon become a familiar one across the UK - as there are plans to open a chain of Whitby’s restaurants, with DFS founder and Cantley millionaire Lord Kirkham helping to finance the project as one of the restaurants financial directors.

There is already a branch in Catcliffe, Rotherham and according to retail experts, there are proposals to open more than 100 fish and chip restaurants around the country.

The Doncaster restaurant has been almost a year in the making but while many original and existing features of the fire station have been retained, the fireman’s pole had to be removed.
Added Darren, 34: “It has been a challenge but we are almost ready. It will be a restaurant for all generations offering quality food at affordable prices.”
As well as fish and chips, the restaurant will also sell other meals including pies, lasagne and salads as well as desserts, and will open from 11.30am to 9pm.
