EMERGENCY cash injection of more than £600,000 has been agreed by Doncaster councillors to ensure the borough benefits from superfast broadband technology.

The council’s cabinet met to consider a request for further funding from Digital Region Ltd - a joint partnership involving the four local authorities in South Yorkshire and Yorkshire Forward.

Digital Region Ltd board members had been seeking a degree of security to move forward their plans for the future before the start of the new financial year and Doncaster has agreed to provide a further £630,000.

Their preferred option is to enter into a process to procure a supplier to take over operations and management of the Digital Region network so that it is available to as many people and businesses as possible in South Yorkshire.

Doncaster Council believes the superfast broadband project will provide greater opportunities to attract inward investment and business growth, leading to a more sustainable economy.

Simon Wiles, Doncaster Council’s Director of Finance and Corporate Services, said after the meeting: “The council’s cabinet has committed further funding of £630,000 to help secure the future of Digital Region Ltd.

“Subject to decisions by our Digital Region partners, the new business model will play its part in ensuring superfast broadband is available to as many people and businesses as possible.

Mr Wiles said it should also help encourage economic development and growth.
