Repair work on Thorne Canal Swing Bridge starts today.
It is anticipated that the works will take about a week to complete.
Theine’s town clerk, Jeremy Sherlock, said: “Due to an increasing number of failures with the operating mechanism, the council commissioned a firm of specialist engineers to investigate the problems and advise on how it could be made more reliable.
“They identified six, some of which has safety implications for automatic use, so the council had no choice but to limit operation to council staff.
“The Engineer who was appointed to carry out the works had to order some specialist parts, and has only now been able to give a date for the start of the works.”
The repairs will cost £5,000.
