The after-school environmental group at West Road Primary School has been going across the road to plant flowers and tidy up the garden in the grounds of the sheltered accommodation at The Hermitage.

The children, who are aged from five to 11-years-old decided to help with the gardening after they were contacted by Doncaster Council to ask if they wanted to help out.

It is not the first project the children have taken on, as they have also grown plants, vegetables and flowers in the quadrangle of their school.

Jenny Cleary, a learning mentor and high level teaching assistant at the school, said: "The people in The Hermitage quite enjoyed the children helping and seeing their work.

"They have tidied everything up, it was all a mess when they started."

Coun Mark Thompson, cabinet member for environment, said: "Well done to all at West Road Primary School who with support from our officers have done a fantastic job.

"Taking part in a project in order to help create a better environment for other residents in the local community to benefit from is something to be thoroughly proud of."
