DONCASTER is stepping out ahead of the rest of Yorkshire after receiving recognition from a national scheme that promotes healthy living.
The area's Walking for Health scheme - which includes events in Thorne and Dunsville - has become the first countywide initiative to gain national accreditation.

To gain this official approval it had to show that it could offer a range of walks le
d by trained leaders.

The walks were judged by the national body - Walking the Way to Health - as suitable for beginners of all ages and abilities and met strict safety standards.

Councillor Eva Hughes, Cabinet Member for Children and Public Health said: "I'm delighted that Doncaster's organised walks have been given this national recognition.

"Whether its organised walks, or just a gentle stroll to the shops, walking is a great way to improve general health and start feeling fitter."

In the past 12 months Doncaster's Walking for Health scheme has trained 64 volunteer walk leaders to lead walks in the community.

Regular local walking fixtures for 2008 take place every Monday from the Community Centre, High Street, Dunsville, 10.30am, phone 01302 882081; every third Monday from various locations in Thorne, 10am, phone 01405 812357; every Tuesday from the Delves Café, Selby Road, Thorne, 11am.
