A NEW bus service linking some of South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire's most picturesque beauty spots has been launched.
The Peatlands Wayfarer Service (505) will follow as closely as possible the Peatlands Way long distance footpath route, linking settlements including Thorne, Moorends, Crowle, Belton, Epworth, Haxey, Wroot, Hatfield Woodhouse and Stainforth and inclu
ding the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature Reserves at Thorne and Hatfield Moors.
Along the route passengers can try out one of the many walks, stop for a picnic, enjoy the wildlife or call at tourist attractions such as the Boston Park Maize Maze, the Epworth Wesley Trail, the Sandtoft Trolley-bus Museum and the Thorne Farmers' Market or just use the service for visiting relatives and friends.
This year the service will run four times a day every Sunday and Bank Holiday throughout the summer to a regular timetable. Day "rover" tickets are £3 and family tickets are £5 (covering up to two adults and two children), with normal bus concessions applying.
Thorne and Moorends Town Council clerk Ian Harrison explained: "People can hail the bus wherever they want on the 50 mile route.
"This has never been done before and if it is a success then in subsequent years we are hopeful to do it every day in the summer."
The scheme was formed through a partnership with the Humberhead Levels Green Tourism Forum, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and Natural England.
