REVIEW: Butlers Tearoom and Bistro Cusworth Hall Tea Rooms, Doncaster

There are few eateries with such an atmospheric setting and beautiful views as the tearooms at Cusworth Hall .
We took advantage of one of the last days of late summer to sit outside admiring the views of the landscaped park and Doncaster in the distance, but when the weather turns chilly the place is just as appealing with its crackling fire.
In new hands, and now called Butlers, this little gem is one of the most popular coffee shops in the area, and rightly so.
The decor is great; stone-flagged floors and stripped wooden tables are in-keeping with its history as part of the stable-block of the adjoining hall.
The menu has something for all tastes and pockets. As well as standard coffee shop offerings such as ploughman’s and jacket potatoes, there are daily specials, which, on our visit, included vegetable and bean hot-pot, chilli con carne and quiche and salad, all for a very reasonable £5.60. The soup of the day was leek and potato at £3.40 and there was a tempting range of home-made puds, including the perennial favourite sticky toffee pudding, for £2.80. If you’ve walked up an appetite from your morning stroll up to the hall, Butlers’ full breakfast sounded tempting at £5.25.
We’d had lunch so it was coffee and cake only for us. Coffee was good, a home-made choc chip cookie was crunchy and very choclately and a generous slice of banoffee gateau was light and creamy with a yummy toffee and banana filling.
The coffee shop has extended both its outdoor and indoor seating areas since our last visit, which was much-needed as the coffee shop is very popular all year round.
The owners are already gearing up for the festive season with a tempting Christmas afternoon tea advertised - a cream tea with the addition of Christmas cake and mini mince pies - for £9.50, Christmas lunches and evening dinners and lunch on Christmas Day itself being advertised.The only thing that lets the coffee shop down is the toilets and I suspect these are the responsibilty of the hall.

USEFUL TO KNOW: There is a parking charge at Cusworth Hall, but many people do walk to the coffee shop.
