Pettits Coffee Shop Mexborough

Pettits has been established as an up market shoe retailer in Mexborough since 1860. Upstairs is the coffee shop, which offers shoppers a welcome place to rest their feet.

On a Thursday lunchtime I popped in to sample their lunchtime special.

The coffee shop, which is licensed, forms a spacious U shape and is much larger than one would imagine from outside.

In keeping with the attached shoe retailers, the restaurant is well-established and usually very busy with customers, from affluent young mums to pensioners, passing the time of day or being taken for a lunchtime treat.

They were tucking into a range of snacks and home made mains an desserts served in traditional British style with little attempt at continental gourmet fashions.

With two courses at £7.50 I could have chosen from lasagne salad and crusty bread, Yorkshire Pudding sausage, sprouts and onion gravy, or a perhaps ploughman’s lunch. I had broccoli quiche with salad, followed by Banoffee pie and cream.

The quiche was home made, the crust golden brown and the filling imediately looked appetizing with chunks of well cooked broccoli, lacing the cheese filling which had a good texture and didn’t sag into the pastry. The salad was fresh and crisp - the solid English variety - lettuce carrot, onion cucumber, with no continental touches like olives or vinaigrette - although the option of Hellman’s dressing, salad cream or mayonnaise was offered to perk it up. A small portion of home-made coleslaw completed the dish. My Banoffee pie was excellent, with a crumbly biscuit and butter base melting in the mouth, alongside the banana and cream toffee. This was washed down with a mug of decent filter coffee - I resisted the tempatation of a Calypso coffee with Tia Maria or Gaelic with whiskey. Had to get back to work and all that. Pettits obviously know their customers inside out and exactly what they want - good quality unpretentious food with excellent service.
