New exhibition is hot off the press
Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery.
Hot off the Press’ is the title of a new exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery which looks at the wonderful world of printmaking.
Taken from the large number of prints held in the collection of Doncaster Museum Service, the exhibition examines the history and techniques of the main printmaking processes, Etching, Block Printing, Lithography and Screen Printing.
Because prints are not unique images they are often seen as being inferior to a painting or a drawing. But it should not be forgotten that some of the greatest artists in the history of art, including Durer and Rembrandt were enthusiastic printmakers, and many artists have specialised in printmaking, to the exclusion of all other art forms.
The collection of prints held by Doncaster Museum Service is particularly rich in works by modern British artists, and some of the best known printmakers in the history of 20th century British Art, including Eric Gill, Sir Frank Brangwyn R.A and Doncaster born artist Edgar Holloway are included in this display.
Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “The Museum continually attracts some of the most special and educational displays - and I’m delighted to see this latest one is no exception. Whether you’re an enthusiast, or might not know anything about printmaking at all, here is a unique opportunity to head down to the Museum, see this wonderful exhibition and experience a cultural day out.”
The exhibition also includes a display of printmaking materials, which help to give an insight into the processes used to produce a print.
The exhibition is one of a series of annual exhibitions highlighting parts of the Fine Art Collection held by Doncaster Museum Service.
