A bargain, but not cheap

Tower Bridge, one of London's many tourist attractions.

IT’S not often that you find a bargain in London, writes Kath Finlay.

If you’re looking for an overnight stay that won’t break the bank the compromise is often on the quality and location of your accommodation.

So imagine my surprise that a hotel just a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street Station and at the heart of the City of London advertises rooms from just £35 per night.

I was even more surprised on arrival at the Tune Hotel just off Bishopsgate - and in a good way too.

If, like me, you aren’t familiar with the Tune concept, it’s a brilliant idea. On a busy sight-seeing break what do we want from a city hotel? A clean room, a comfy bed for a good night’s rest and a good shower. And that is Tune’s USP.

There are very definitely no frills. If you want towels, toiletries, a hairdryer, TV or internet, it’s all extra with a comfort package including all the above a very reasonable £7 a day.

But what you do get is a clean, comfortable room - albeit on the small side - with very comfortable bed and quality bed linen and a very efficient power shower. Tune says it sources its beds and bedding from the same companies that supply five-star hotels and I can believe it.

You do pay extra for a window, which pushes the cost of a double room on a Saturday in mid-June or early October up from £55 a night to £70. Our room, quietly situated at the back of the hotel, did have a window - and with a bit of a view too over the hotel’s attractive courtyard garden.

There is a 24-hour reception (with very friendly, helpful and courteous staff) but there is no restaurant, though there are vending machines and a seating area.

This wasn’t a problem at all. After a tiring day taking in the sights of Greenwich - easily reached via Docklands Light Railway - and a quick re-charge of the batteries, we headed out into Spitalfields, just a few minutes walk from the hotel. There was no shortage of fantastic eateries and bars to cater for all tastes in this lively area. Trendy Shoreditch and Petticoat Lane market are also within easy reach.

Tune also has hotels in Westminster and Paddington.
