A formula for fun on a budget

1. Concert

Some of Doncaster’s best choral singers will gather for a special performance all in aid of charity.

Simply Voices, a collective of singers from Barnburgh Male Voice Choir, Barnburgh Village Singers, The Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and the Giocoso String Quartet, present You’ve Got a Friend.

Author and public speaker Gervase Phinn will compere the evening and proceeds raised will go to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

2. Exhibition

Looking in Wonderland is a selection of the best of Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s two Alice books – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. This exhibition is a selection of the best illustrations from both books in which the creative genius of both Carroll and Tenniel is shown at its best.

When: Monday to Thursday from 10am to 4.30pm. Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 4.15pm.

3. Exhibition

The Horsing Around exhibition brings together some of the finest equine images from the Doncaster collection. It includes works by J.F Herring and Charles Simpson, which are show alongside a series of watercolours by Barnsley based artist Joanne Kitson. Joanne has created the works especially for the exhibition.

4. WALK

Take in the fresh air and enjoy a gentle stroll through Sandall Beat Wood. This is a great central location, packed with wildlife, trails and footpaths. The walk is suitable for people with disabilities and is organised by Sue Ryder Care. Part of the Walking for Health initiative to encourage more people to be active on a regular basis, there are walks to suit all abilities and the walk leaders main aim is to ensure that you enjoy being outdoors by pointing out interesting facts along the way. You do not need any special clothing but it is advised to wear shoes that are comfortable and provide good support. Walkers should bring along a water bottle with them, even in wet weather. It is advisable to call before attending a walk to confirm the details and attendance.

5. Music

Stylish, snappy and soulful, The Finks are rated as Europe’s finest groove-organ quartet. The four-piece was formed by Magazine, Visage and St Louis Union keyboard supremo Dave Formula, with Doncaster’s Angel brother’s, guitarist Dave and drummer Keith, alongside roots session bassist Andy Seward. Playing tracks by The Meters, Booker T and The MGs and Jimmy Smith, mixed with a bunch of outstanding original tunes.
