Families in Doncaster looking to make a positive change are invited to join Healthy Eating Week to make those changes.

Staff from the Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary are encouraging families to get involved in something life-changing.

The British Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Week, which ends on June 7, is aimed at children and their families. The purpose of the week is to promote a healthy balanced diet and calls on parents, families and even teachers to get on board.

Many families face challenges and sometimes struggle to get the right balance. In 2013/14 data from the National Child Measurement Programme showed that 32 percent of year 6 children in Doncaster were overweight. Not everyone knows that change is possible and that help is available if you live in Doncaster.

Dietitian and member of the Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster team, Kimberley Edwards, said: “There are so many benefits to healthy eating. In particular for children it can increase energy levels and concentration as well as helping them reach the right weight to do all the things they want to do. Healthy Eating week is the perfect opportunity for families to make the changes they need to lead healthier lives.”

As part of Healthy Eating Week, members of the Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster team are encouraging families to join their free weight management course and get on the right track to a healthy, happy, active life this summer. Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster can help children, families and adults and includes the right mix of one to one support, group support and activity sessions.

Because everyone is different, Healthy Lifestyles Doncaster provides expertise from a range of professionals including dieticians, physiotherapists and exercise specialists. This friendly team aims to provide children and their families with the right support and encouragement to make really positive lifestyle changes.

Coun Pat Knight, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “Doncaster Council is working hard to regenerate the borough, create investment and opportunities to improve the quality of life for residents. We recognise that there is an issue with excess weight and our aim is to help families improve their health and wellbeing together.”

Families can get involved at a range of local venues, including Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Mexborough Hospital, Askern, Edlington, Hatfield, Intake, Thorne, Doncaster Dome and Dearne Valley Leisure Centre.
