Stand-up star Jason Manford has given his backing to a new Doncaster comedy club.
he comic has launched a nationwide project called Manford’s Comedy Club which will bring a host of top comedians to regional venues, allowing comedy lovers to see top class mirthmakers stars on their doorstep.
And Rhinos Club in Woodlands has been hand-picked by the star as one of his chosen venues and and will kick off next Saturday.
He said: “I’ve been wondering for while now, why is local stand up comedy not high up on the list of what people think about doing when looking for a great night out?
“Even ten-pin bowling is considered higher up than comedy - how can that be?
“How can throwing a massive rock at ten wooden things be more fun than sitting in a dark room with your friends or partner, drink in hand, watching someone funny tell jokes that make you all laugh from your belly for hours and hours and give you something to talk about all the next day? That seems crazy to me.”
So the former One Show presenter, who has also appeared on panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week, hit on the idea of introducing affordable comedy nights at a string of venues across Britain.
He added: “When it comes to your local, affordable comedy club, the simple but all-important question is: “But how do I know they will be funny?”
“Is it worth paying a tenner for a night out when there’s a chance you could end up sat in uncomfortable awkward silence as some bloke, whose mates told him he was “easily like, the funniest bloke in the office”, attempts to regale you with his tales of drunken hilarity?
“There is a circuit of brilliant comics in this country who haven’t been on telly for a number of reasons. There are funny people out there who thrive in the live arena and want to make you laugh on a regular basis, so I’m going to tell you who they are.
“My plan is this: I’m going to carefully select some of my favourite comedians from the circuit and send them to a town near you. Simple!”
Rhinos will kick off the comedy club on Saturday with Mandy Knight, Dave Williams and Adam Staunton taking to the mike.
The show starts at 8pm. Admission is £10.
The monthly shows will see Ray Peacock, Kiri Pritchard and Davey Johns take to the stage on November 8, with Tudur Owen, Peter Brush and others to be confirmed performing on December 6.
Tickets for all dates are on sale at www.manfordscomedyclub.com along with details of other venues across the region which have signed up to the project.
