West Yorkshire Playhouse and Kneehigh will present the World Premiere of Steptoe and Son this autumn.

Two men, two world wars and two lives knitted together as tight as a thrice darned sock.

Steptoe and Son is adapted and directed by Emma Rice, from the legendary scripts of Galton and Simpson, this new co-production between long time collaborators Kneehigh and West Yorkshire Playhouse charts the tender, cruel and surprising dance of father and son.

Taking on the roles of one of television’s most famous pairings is Kneehigh’s Mike Shepherd playing Albert and Dean Nolan who will make his Kneehigh debut as dreamer Harold. The production will be made in Leeds before headlining at The Asylum during August and running at the Playhouse in September.

Emma commented on the project: “The words, situations and basic genius of this script are all the work and imagination of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. I laughed and wept in equal measure as I made my way through the scripts that make up the Steptoe and Son cannon. The work is deeper, darker and more intricate than I’d ever realised, watching as a child.”

Steptoe and Son started life in Kneehigh’s infamous barns on the cliff tops of Cornwall where the company explored the scripts, characters and stories that will be told in this new adaptation.

In June Kneehigh will head to Leeds to collaborate with the production and technical teams resident at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Steptoe and Son will open Kneehigh’s programme of work at the Asylum, Cornwall, on July 21, 2012.

Kneehigh describes it as “a show for anyone who has had a parent, anyone who has had a child, anyone who has wanted to tear the walls down and run across the fields naked.”

Darkly comic, and deeply moving, this is a 20th century icon, re imagined for the new millennium’.

Steptoe and Son will open at West Yorkshire Playhouse on September 14, before embarking on a UK tour.
