VISIT: Youngsters show their support for Team GB.

YOUNGSTERS from across Swinton showed there is more to school than the confines of the classroom by taking part in a number of extra curricular activities.

Around 30 students from Swinton Community School were selected for their commitment to school sports to attend the London 2012 Paralympics.

The group cheered on Team GB in wheelchair tennis and rugby matches, while event organisers also taught them the rules of sports less familiar such as goalball.

P.E. teacher Laura Barratt said: “The Paralympic visit provided an eye opening experience and I had complete admiration for the skill of the athletes.

“The atmosphere at the wheelchair rugby was electric, and I was very proud to be able to support Team GB.”

Pupils also showed their sporting prowess in the school’s second annual fishing match, held at Elm Tree Farm in Rotherham.

Joshua Halford was the winner, while Ethan Smith placed second and Kian Hurst took third.

Year 10, 11 and 12 pupils were given a crash course in acting when the Open Minds Theatre Company visited the school.

They completed a drama skills workshop over two days, which incorporated acting skills and dance.

Headteacher David Pridding said: “It is extremely important to give young people a wider experience of their time at school.

“Exam results are very important and they have improved.

“But at the same time we don’t want to just be an exams factory, we can give students great memories they will always remember.”
