Top level refs back golf day
PREMIER League referees swapped their whistles for golf clubs to help tee-off a memorial day remembering a young Doncaster teacher who died suddenly.
Top level officials Mike Dean and Phil Dowd joined around 80 keen golfers who all helped to raise over a massive £4,500 for two worthy causes.
The event was held in memory of Richard Waight, a science teacher from The Hayfield School, who died at the age of 23 from Sudden Arrhythmic Disease (also known as SADS).
The event, organised by Richard’s parents Ken and Jackie Waight, invited scores of golfers to take on the course at Doncaster Golf Club and tee off against other teams.
There was also a dinner and charity auction with sports fans out-bidding each other to get their hands on impressive prizes such as signed shirts from Barcelona hot-shot Lionel Messi, talented Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley and a referee’s jersey signed by all the top-flight officials.
The memorial event is now in its second year and it is expected that the charity golf day will become an annual occasion.
Mr Waight said: “The day was another fantastic success.
“I am absolutely delighted that we made over £4,500 from the whole event. This is much more than we were hoping for and after excluding a significant donation made last time, it is actually a little more than last year.”
The money will be split between SADS UK - which will receive £3,000 - and the rest will go towards the Richard Waight ‘SchoolsGolf’ initiative which has been set-up in the teacher’s honour because he was a keen golfer and tutored young pupils in the sport before his tragic death back in 2009.
His father told the Free Press that he hopes to roll out the golfing scheme to more schools across Doncaster as well as clubs in the borough.
He is encouraging more people to get onboard with the project.
