a DONCASTER teen is speaking out about her parents decision to foster as part of a new campaign to encourage more families to get involved.

Harriet Hickson, 16, has joined forces with her mum and dad to help get the borough behind fostering for the Doncaster Council campaign.

Chris and Vicky Hickson have been involved in promoting the importance of ‘local foster families for local children’ for some time but have recently stepped up the family’s commitment by getting their daughter involved in encouraging more people to extend their family and take the first steps to fostering.

Harriet is keen to give a perspective on what birth children think when their parents decide to foster a child, as she believes that having foster children in their family has enriched her life and helped her to form friendships.

Harriet will be at the next fostering recruitment drop in event at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry on Tuesday between 5pm and 8pm, along with her parents and the council’s team to talk to anyone who is considering fostering.

Harriet said, “I was 12 when my parents started fostering and was initially hesitant but soon overcame this and have welcomed lots of children into our home.

“I am pleased to be part of these recruitment events because I think it‘s important that prospective carers can talk to someone about how their own children may feel and the impact it may have on their family.”
