Success for charity sleep out fundraiser

Local children and young peoples charity SAFE@LAST is calling for the people of Doncaster to register for The BIG Sleepout and sleep rough for one night so young runaways dont have to. The BIG Sleepout event will return to Lakeside Village Outlet Shopping for the third year on Friday 28 September and this year Doncasters own Civic Mayor, Councillor Christine Mills will be in attendance to show her support. MORE than £6,000 has been raised to help young runaways after fundraisers slept out for the night.

The Big Sleepout took place at Lakeside Village for the third year, with around 60 people spending the night under the stars at the shopping centre.

The event was organised by with children’s charity SAFE@LAST who look after the 4,000 South Yorkshire young people each year who are runaways or homeless.

SAFE@LAST Operations Director Mark Smith said: “We had an excellent turnout this year and it was good to see familiar faces as well as lots of new supporters.

“The support and goodwill we received on the night from all the retail staff at Lakeside was wonderful and we hope that the event will raise in excess of £6000 which will help us to continue our work with young runaways.”

To help keep spirits high Doncaster Rovers donated ten pairs of tickets worth £400 for prizes, with the remainder being used by SAFE@LAST for activities with young people in need of support.

Councillors Kevin Rodgers and Rachel Hodson were among those sleeping out for the night, with the Mayor of Doncaster and civic mayor Christine Mills also in attendance to support the sleepers.
