ST LEGER homes has been awarded £100,000 to help grow a healthier future for Doncaster residents.

The housing organisation, which manages about 21,000 homes for Doncaster Council, was given £105,214 from Local Food, a lottery funded project aiming to make locally grown food more accessible and affordable to communities.

The Doncaster part of the project is called ‘Budding for Sustainable Food’ and will help people to learn how to grow food, from planting the seeds to tending the allotment and how the produce can be turned into healthy meals.

There will be a number of sites across Doncaster, the first ones being at a community centre in Woodlands which will be looked after by an over 60s group, and the second in Hyde Park which will be tended by young people who go to the Hip Hop dance class.

A group for people with learning disabilities will look after a third site at the Holmescarr Centre, Rossington, while youngsters, aged between four and nine who go to an after school club will also grow cress and lettuce there.

In total 25 community gardens will be set up through the funding.

Carol Higgins, St Leger Homes’ community development officer who is leading the project, said: “The project will start by showing volunteers how to plant seeds, then once they are germinated they will be planted into the community garden sites. The volunteers will then tend the sites until the produce is ready to harvest.”
