SLIDESHOW: SSS-elebrating the Year of the Snake

CHOPSTICKS took the place of knives and forks at a Belton school on Friday, as Chinese New Year was celebrated throughout the building.

Youngsters ditched their uniforms for the day, and arrived at Belton All Saints in a riot of bright red and gold colours instead, in line with the Chinese traditions they had been studying.

Banners the children made were put up around the school, and at lunchtime both pupils and staff sat down to enjoy typical Chinese fare of noodles, sweet and sour dishes, and lemon cookies to mark the Year of the Snake.

Headteacher Sarah Groves said: “We had some wonderful outfits that children and their families had put together themselves at home. They have been learning about ancient Chinese traditions, and the origins of present day celebrations. It was a very interesting day.”

Also on Friday, year one pupils invited mums and dads in to see their ‘spotlight’ assembly about work they have completed on a toy theme this term.

It included a toy workshop held in conjunction with the museum service, when pupils tried Victorian toys along with others from living memory – from whips and tops to wind-up tin toys and wooden hoops.

“These assemblies are an opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their work to the school and parents, and show off their many successes,” said Mrs Groves.
