AN impending ear operation will not stop Hannah Hoyland in her watery tracks.

On Saturday, the 10-year old Lacewood Primary pupil from Carr Head Lane, Bolton, will attempt one mile in Dearne Leisure Centre baths at Goldthorpe to support Marie Curie cancer care and Sport Relief.

Her mum Sharon said: “Hannah suffers from glue ear and is due to have a small operation for grommets to be fitted, but she was still determined to do the swimathon.

“I am so proud of her. It will be a huge challenge. She’s swum 32 lengths before but not 64. We’ll all be there to cheer her on.”

Glue ear is a collection of sticky fluid in the middle ear that can be treated by grommets or tiny tubes inserted into the eardrum. They allow air to pass through the eardrum.

“Hannah had glue ear as a tot but it had cleared up by the time she was six. We don’t know why it re-appeared,” said Sharon.

The youngster has practised hard for her attempted mile. She is currently working towards her lifesaving badge and is on an eight weeks diving course.

“She loves swimming - that and singing are her passions,” added Sharon. “After her operation she may wear special ear plugs in the water for a few months.”

Talented Hannah also sings with the Barnsley Youth Choir.
