Real ale pub gets green light to open for longer
A REAL ale enthusiasts’ pub has been given the go-ahead to open its doors for longer – despite worries the move could lead to an increase in crime and disorder.
The Cooper and Griffin pub in Bawtry will be able to stay open and serve alcohol beyond midnight at weekends after Doncaster Council agreed to changes to the venue’s licence.
The move had been opposed by two residents living nearby to the pub – formerly The Penny Farthing – in the town’s High Street.
South Yorkshire Police had also raised concerns over the extended opening times.
Doncaster businessman Andrew Longworth, whose family has run the well-known Regent Hotel in Doncaster town centre for many years, is behind the refurbished pub and hotel which was back in business before Christmas.
Mr Longworth, who lives in Clayworth and formerly ran the Bacchus Wine Bar in Retford, also owns the Cask Corner bar in Cleveland Street, Doncaster.
Letters sent to the council’s Licensing Sub Committee expressed fears over noise and public disorder and loud music blasting from the premises.
One resident raised fears over ‘rowdyism’ while another complained about problems under the pub’s previous guise and said: “Our patience for disturbance is at is end and we will be alerting the appropriate departments and authorities if this happens under the new management.”
Under the terms of the new licence, the pub will be able to host live music from 10am to 11.30pm Sundays to Thursdays and from 10am to 12.30am on Fridays and Sundays. The bar will be able to stay open an extra two hours on Fridays and Saturday until 1.30am – though a request to serve alcohol until that time was refused. Last orders will now be at 1am.
The venue, formerly The Granby Hotel, also has eight bedrooms – which means it will be able to serve alcohol 24 hours a day to residents.
