Modern pharmacies
IN RESPONSE to the letter in last week's Gazette regarding the methadone programme delivered from our pharmacy in Moorends I would like to make the following comments.
All pharmacies in the UK must provide such NHS services in local communities in accordance with Government national contract for pharmacy.
In our modern pharmacies the patients are treated in a separate room away from the general public to allow them privacy when taking their medication.
The service is not new to our pharmacy at Moorends and we will continue to treat local patients only.
We have strict contracts between us and the PCT on the behaviour of the patients and each individual agrees to and signs a strict code of conduct contract.
Part of this agreement includes the prohibition of loitering around the area of the pharmacy and causing disturbances in the immediate area.
Methadone patients voluntarily join the scheme to break their addiction and Weldricks believe in the benefits to the community when we help addicts in conjunction with the PCT and other healthcare services.
Treatment with methadone in pharmacies helps reduce the use of illegal drug substances from the locality and manages the patient in a more controlled way.
Addiction is an illness and the role of pharmacy is to treat all patients equally without categorising illnesses into acceptable/unacceptable types.
The methadone treatment programme is a managed programme to reduce addiction and dependency while introducing a degree of routine into the patient's life, the overall aim being to reduce the number of addicts in the community.
