A SPECIAL guest dropped by at a Dearne event, to hand out substantial amounts of cash to community concerns.

South Yorkshire Olympian archer Amy Oliver was at the Thurnscoe Big Local event to celebrate the cash awards, and to announce two winners of a logo competition.

Amy, who has held both British and European titles in the last five years, presented prizes to logo winners Joshua Smith, five, and Courtney Barratt, 11. Courtney’s logo will be used by the Big Local group on all future promotional material.

Cheques of £500 each were then given to successful applicants the Dearne Archery Group, Station House, the Hill Parents’ Group, Windsor Court Bingo Group, Roots and Shoot, and Houghton Road Community Centre.

Local organisations the 2 Act Theatre Company and the Hickleton Youth Project provided entertainment at the evening, held at the Coronation Club, Thurnscoe. A raffle raised £53 to be donated to Barnsley Hospice and Cancer Research UK.

The event gave the community a chance to find out more about Big Local – a funding programme that will run for at least 10 years – and other information related to Thurnscoe and the surrounding area.
