MINERS who lost their lives at a Doncaster colliery were remembered at an emotional memorial service.

Hundreds attended the Markham Main Colliery service where the names of all 87 men who were killed during its 76-year history were read out.

It is hoped the service that took place at Armthorpe Community Centre will now become an annual event.

Barney McKevitt who worked at Markham Main from 1955 to 1976 and helped organise the event, said: “This was the first time we have held the service so hopefully we know have a blueprint for years to come.

“It was a lovely day, the weather was kind to us and hundreds of people attended.

Councillor Tony Cordon added: “We are staging this memorial service to hopefully become the first of many. We are hoping it will become an annual event”.

There were a total of 87 fatalities at the colliery, the youngest being just 15.
