An intrepid Conisbrough grandad is planning to trek across Iceland to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Jim Beachill is looking forward to traversing the volcanic island’s unforgiving terrain, and ticking off yet another world wide experience on his ‘bucket list’.

If all goes well Mr Beachill will be jetting off to Reykjavik next August, with his fellow adventurers - grandchildren Jack, 15 and Elisha, 13.

The accountant of Marchdale Rise said: “It’s a great place to see and a trek across from one side to the other will be a big challenge.

“We are very excited at the prospect of seeing glaciers such as Virkisjökull and the Snæfellsjokull volcano.”

Beside the incredible challenge and adventure this will be again for the benefit of the Weston Park Cancer Hospital in Sheffield.

It’s the fourth charity trek the 68-year-old and his family have undertaken. Two years ago a 100 mile walk along the Great Wall of China raised £20,000 for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, which also benefitted from a Hadrian’s Wall challenge, which saw the trio raise £6,000. This followed an American coast to coast adventure. Mr Beachill was inspired to compile his personal bucket list after seeing the film of the same name two years ago.

He explained, “My wife (Barbara) was diagnosed withy cancer some 15 years ago and spent some weeks in Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield under their treatment and care. The treatment was successful and she was given the all clear. Thank you for saving someone’s life is never enough and so we decided to use the bucket list challenges to help the hospital”.

The trio hope to raise £10,000 with the Iceland trek and have set up a website.
