RESIDENTS with learning disabilities have been given a helping hand in accessing healthcare with a series of new booklets.

The booklets have been created by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) and use clear images and appropriate language to describe a learning disabled person’s journey through a variety of situations including visits to the opticians and dentist, stopping smoking, as well as breast and cervical screening for women.

RDaSH acute liaison nurse Glynis Smith said: “We believe that learning disabled people deserve equal access to healthcare services, but research shows that they experience poorer general health and are three times more likely to die early than the rest of the general population.”

The booklets are free to download from the Trust’s website at www.rdash.nhs.uk
