A MEMORIAL service is to be held to celebrate the life of a Conisbrough preacher who devoted her life to teaching children in South Yorkshire.
Doris Cunnington-nee-Smith died at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.. Her funeral was held at Conisbrough Methodist Church followed by a cremation at Doncaster.
Her niece Wendy Boardman of Hellaby, told the Times: “Doris leaves four generations of nieces and nephews who she has influenced in many ways and will be greatly missed.
“Aunty Doris was A kind and generous lady who always had time for everyone.
“She was a good listener. She was a preacher and teacher to a lot of people in the area, but of course there are not many of her generation of friends still around.
“She was lovely - a real people person - she especially loved children.
“The highlight of her year was listening to the children’s choir on Songs of Praise on the television.
“She has lots of nephews and nieces but no children.
Doris, who died on January 21, lived in Conisbrough as a girl and went to Mexborough Grammar School.
After training college in Bingley she started her teaching career in Sheffield, then Station Road School Conisbrough and finally to Doncaster in 1955.
She taught at Hawthorn, Sycamore and Partridge Primary.
“Some of the schools no longer exist and many have changed their names now, but there will be lots of her former pupils around who will remember her.”
While in Doncaster she trained to be a local preacher in the Methodist Church and helped with the Sunday School at St Andrew’s, Beckett Road.
Doris retired as headmistress from Sutton Road Infants after she married Claude Cunnington in 1979 at Conisbrough Methodist Church.
The coupled moved to Adwick le Street where they both attended the local Methodist Church.
She moved back to Conisbrough in 1995 when Claude died and was looked after by her family.
There will be a memorial service at Adwick Le Street Methodist Church on Sunday , April 22, at 6 pm to celebrate her life.
Mrs Boardman added: “Doris and Claude were both very involved with Adwick Le Street Methodist Church and she always kept her membership up.
“We thought that it would be the best place for her memorial”.
